Had an entertaining afternoon sailing

8 October [1916] Sunday

Church Parade 9.15. Posted in last night’s orders to St Lawrence Camp where nominal duties are undertaken as in other Convalescent Camps here to entitle convalescent officers to Field allowances.
Went down with Miller K.R. Rifles to the beach after tea and hired a sailing dinghy for a week with option to break the engagement on Wednesday in case either of us is sent away. Had an entertaining afternoon sailing – the boat is about 9 feet long pin beam, no centerboard or deep keel, a woefully insufficient rudder and worthless tiller. The oars were I think introduced to each other by me, and of totally different weights, balances and grip of the water! The wind was uncertain and I much regret to have to confess that we were forced to row out to the breeze and then after the sail row in again. Ran into the bathing bay and had a very pleasant bathe.
