Had a glorious bathe and then sailed about

11th October 1916

Out in the morning with Miller and sailed without difficulty into the bathing bay. Had a glorious bathe and then sailed about with the most constant wind we have had. Later wind became gusty and we were driving at a great speed before it towards a reef intending to ‘go about’ near the reef. Faster and faster we went till 20 yards off Miller warned me he was going about. I jumped for the jib and to balance and he put down the tiller hand to starboard. Crack! The tiller broke and we continued our mad journey towards rocks rudderless! We got about with the oars when four or five yards off certain wreck!
Rowed about with Downes 65th Bde [?] Coy in the afternoon. Left Ghain Tuffeiha camp 5.30 for All Saints Active Service Camp near Valetta where we arrived 6pm. Dinner and turned in, Miller and I sharing a bell tent.
