Greatcoats and bivouacs double their weight with water

16th December 1915

Off again at 10 am along the bank of the Galiko on a different track for a few miles. Put up the bivouacs in a field in the rain and got them thoroughly wet trying to put things straight. Got things ship shape just in time to be ordered to move. Everybody dripping. Greatcoats and bivouacs double their weight with water and a squelch at every step. Moved about another mile in hopeless mud and put up in a gorge. Everything and everybody miserable, with the wet and wood too soaked for a fire. Eat half a tin of bully and a few biscuits and lay down on the wet grass in a drenched state and tried to make up my mind that I was happy – 6 pm!
