German and Turkish airplanes over camp in the afternoon

16th January [1916]

Up 6.15 bitterly cold, but fine and climbed the Matterhorn with the same three men as last time – Ridgway, Clarke and Smart. To annoy Hqtrs wired down at 8.40 to ask if I was to be replaced by another Regt and heard the Lancashire Fusiliers were coming up. Budden relieved me at 9.30 and I went down and had breakfast, a shave and a wash.
Thaw set in in forenoon and continued into the afternoon – the hot strong sun and blue cloudless sky made a dazzling light.
German and Turkish airplanes over camp in the afternoon – the first I knew of the existence of Turkish machines. It was marked with red crescent and blue star – a colourable (sic) imitation of our own red, white and blue bulls eye target mark.
Frost set in again tonight. Wrote Father.
