[March 29th 1916]idian stocks, with their many different sections and races are to be seen in every street, and must confuse the minds of the Arabs with their strange appearances. But from knowing them I have grown accustomed to them and can recognize them all as seperate and distinct. But with the permanent inhabitants of the town it is different for the first appearance of a new people of different types puzzles the mind; all seem alike and some little familiarity must be gained before the full powerof analysis returns. It is some days before the varied types can be separately distinguished; at first the grosser appearances, the costumes, the colour, the general attitudes, the more striking habits so fill the mind that the minor details are all crowded out.
