Five hour day ordered by Army Commander

31st December 1915

Fine day – working in trenches. Paid the men. No post. Five hour day ordered by Army Commander instead of six hours. Report by French reconnaissance that there are no Germans on Greek Frontier, that Greek territory is free from Bulgars but that they have three large camps on Greek side of Karabail – a Hasanli and other places and are making no attempts to reopen the railways and bridges wrecked by the French. This followed by information that the Army Commander thinks one days work can be spared in the week, so I suppose the stress is over.
More rows in the mess. Anderson, Smellie v. Cross. How they row! How fed up with each other we get! Small post in containing one from Mrs Stirling and one from Daisy [?]Bunce. One year’s soldiering completed. The first month I was in Trinity I scarcely ever went home except for two weekends. Since then I have had few chances! Oh! For the first month now!
