[12th October 1916] they fall down dead from their fatigue, or will struggle over the battle-field until they expire from exhaustion and wounds are creatures of the stoutest heart and the most unbending resolution. Yet they are hybrids, existing not in the rough world of Nature, but brought into being by the wish, and living with the consent of man, and for ever unable to stamp on any progeny their mighty qualities of heart and soul.

Sheep. Enormous flocks of sheep graze on the open plains. In the month of June with the temperature above 120°F many sheep may l be seenstill wearing their thick coats of fleece. It is incredible how they can exist with so warm a covering in the insufferable heat. Yet they do not appear in any way inconvenienced.*
