Country there very flat with great thickets of dried bamboo

22nd November [1915] Monday

Exceedingly cold night, very sharp frost, water in buckets all frozen. Pity the Lancashire Fusiliers who were out last night on outpost.
Parade this morning at 8.30. Haversack rations carried. Brigade on outpost duty in the flat country south of here. Extraordinary place. We moved out by a map to the F in KALI-CHIF only to find when we got out there that the village had got itself 3 miles out of its alleged position, and the position we took out was I am satisfied about a mile away from where we should be.
Country there very flat with great thickets of dried bamboo cane a dull yellow colour intermixed with dangerous marsh, sandy patches which would be lakes in wet weather, and another kind of thicket – a thick shrub. All very Indian I believe.
Back in camp 4.30 and a quiet evening was followed by a quiet night. Rumours scarce. We have got a few extra warships in the harbour this afternoon.
