Bulgar becoming far more familiar with us as regards shelling

19th August [1916] Saturday

Quiet day comparatively speaking. Bulgar becoming far more familiar with us as regards shelling – too dashed familiar.
George Clancy promoted Lt in Gazette to hand today. High time they gave it to him. Still no sign of mine. The Regiment left England with one Col. two majors, eight captains six Lts and eleven 2nd Lts. Now counting those with us or who are away on leave or sick list expected back, we have one Col. one major three Captains six Lts and fourteen 2nd Lts. No 2nd Lt who left England has been promoted but in place of that we have been given three 1st Lts over our heads from England. Three of the 2nd Lts whose names went in for promotion have gone away to England or hospital not to come back but their promotions will probably be counted in this argument thus blocking us. We still carry on our strength three Captains who left us in France, and one who left us here in January, one 1st Lt whom we left in England, and 1 Major who left us in February. Nice game. The work represented by the deficit of one Major and five Captains is now done by 2nd Lts and N.C.O.s. However! With the Doctor again with my knee. Golly he made me know it was there!
Some shelling again.
