Bad news in the afternoon of British and French reverse

21 August 1916 Monday

On PITON ROCHEUX O.pip from 5 am to 7.30 pm. Very quiet day. Less allied artillery than usual and practically no Bulgar reply.
Bad news in the afternoon of British and French reverse on the right in the Struma valley. Despatch talks of the 16 Corps being up there which can only mean that George’s lot is there with the 10th Divn reserve. They are the only people to complete the Corps.
Warned that we would be relieved 19.00 hours (7 pm) by ‘A’ Coy. After many changes in orders and much indecision typical of the singularly incompetent O.Room, A Coy turned up 9.30 pm. I let Brydon’s lot sleep the night on my hill while I held it. Turned in 11 pm.
