A small polished tin can against the snow

18th January 1916

Great firing from the trenches. Experiment tried. Put up a number of tin cans, whitened roof tiles etc at various distances and ran inter section competition. Firing pretty good all along the line, a small polished tin can against the snow is not exactly an easy mark at 200 yards. Worked in dugouts in the afternoon. Small post in. One letter from Aunt Isabel Smith, Edenderry.
Smellie transferred to C Coy as Commander vice Capt. Dempster invalided home. Mallory transferred to us. Heated argument Bloore and myself v. Cross over the 10th Division. I am glad Bloore has at last seen that the reports of them we got in Doiran from the C.O. were a damned slander, and that they did brilliant work up there. Kaiser reported dead.
