[5th September 1916] useful craft as her high decks overlook the banks of the river and machine guns mounted on her decks can rake the desert. She possesses the disadvantage of being deeper in draught and has already earned the reputation of being continually on the mud. Machine guns can be mounted on the stern wheelers; high platforms are being built on them so as to command the desert.

Friday: September 8th 1916: Nasiriyah
A short parade this morning, but an agreeable change. We practised an attack on a neighbouring village, followed by a retirement. Casualties were assumed to have occurred during the retirement. The removal of them was instructive.
