A narrow road with snow concealing ground on each side

17 January 1916
Three rumours on my return from Akbunar entered now and from Anderson’s lips lest we forget.
No.1 C.S.Maj Collum has heard we are going back to England en route for France.
No.2. King’s Own say we are going back to rest for a month (relieved by Cheshires).
No.3. East Lancs say we are going to Egypt.
General rumours: Going home. England 1st March
Got permission from the Capt for Cross and myself to go into Akbunar to the Divisional Base Ordnance Stores to look for Officers clothes. Borrowed the Captain’s horse when I was satisfied that a thaw was setting in and went off. Road very difficult in places – steep hills frozen pretty hard – a narrow road with snow concealing ground on each side is not exactly the place to meet a big convoy of limbers with mules struggling all over the road to get them up the hill. Found no stores in Akbunar and returned at a good pace. I suppose I will have to live permanently in a torn tunic and other togs.
Post in with 1000 Woodbines from Mrs Stirling and letters from Alice, Kathleen and Ellen.
Long and absurd argument in the mess as to the military possibilities of the Balkans.
Wrote Mrs Stirling (a postscript to yesterday’s letter not yet taken), Cousin Arthur, [?], Ian Wakely.
