How We Can Help

On this page you will find tips on how to make the most of our digital collections repository and our imaging and metadata expertise.

Planning your Digital Research Project

If you are researching a project that requires managing a large set of digital images of visual material, we can provide advice in the following areas:

  • Finding the images you need
  • Image quality necessary for different uses [web, social media, print]
  • How to cite images correctly in your scholarly outputs
  • Selecting the appropriate metadata standards and ontologies to describe images
  • Selecting an appropriate asset management system to manage your images
  • Rights information: How to research an image’s copyright; establishing copyright for different types of image uses: on dissertations and theses, on the web, on print publications. Claiming copyright and selection of appropriate licenses for images created by yourself
  • Creating a Data Management Plan for your research project, which includes archiving your image data set

Using the Digital Collections Repository

  • If you want to get a general sense of what is included in our repository, click on the orange Search button without entering any keywords in the search box. The results page will give you a sense of the variety of materials we digitise
  • Browse by category
  • Each thumbnail will direct you to a navigation page where you will be able to see all items that are part of a particular object
  • Selecting search terms: To find material related to a specific topic, enter keywords in the search box. For instance, to find items related to the 1916 Rising, enter Easter Rising. As you type, a drop down box will appear suggesting possible terms to use in your search. Select “Ireland--History--Easter Rising, 1916.” That search will deliver items related to the Easter Rising. For successful search results, it is best to select one of the categories provided in the drop-down list, rather than entering free text
  • Author’s names: To find material relating to a specific author, enter their name in the following format: ‘surname, firstname’. Example: ‘Yeats, W. B.’ will bring up an option in the drop-down box for ‘Yeats, W. B. (William Butler), 1865-1939’. Click on that option, and all the thumbnails on the results page will relate to materials by or about William Butler Yeats
  • If you already know the reference number of the item you’re researching, enter that into the search box
  • Object screen:

  • Object reference number: This is the call number if you want to see the original object in the Library. Example: ‘EPB 22.nn.7’
  • To see the cataloguing data for the object, go to ‘Click for more information’

  • You can open the entire object with all its components and download it in pdf format: ‘Open in PDF’
  • Open JPG: This will open a downloadable jpg version of the individual image. You can also copy the link to the image or share it through Twitter and Facebook.
  • Discuss this item: If you sign up to our commenting system, you can make comments about the image which will be attached to it and visible to other users when they click on the ‘Discuss this item’ link
  • QR code: You can scan this code with your mobile phone and see the image without having to type in a URL
  • ‘Previous’ and ‘next’ buttons allow you to navigate between the items on the thumbnail strip
  • You can enlarge or reduce the size of the image by clicking on the + and – buttons. You can also return to the standard size, and toggle full page on or off
