More about the Technologies, Law & Society Research Group

The research interests of the Technologies, Law & Society Research Group are broad, reflecting the diversity of its members, but bound by a common purpose to generate impactful and globally-leading research into critical issues at the intersection of law and technology.

Current research areas include:

- ethical and regulatory frameworks for artificial intelligence,

- broader considerations of the European digital rulebook aimed at ensuring that our society aligns with democratic and ethical values,

- deep tech, particularly the promise and potential regulation of quantum technologies, requiring careful consideration to enable it, but guard against cybersecurity and other risks,

- fintech, including the interaction between crypto-assets and security regulation, and

- medtech regulation.

The Technologies, Law & Society Research Group hosts a number of funded projects including JUDGEASSIST, an ERC Consolidator project to investigate the appropriate and principled development of AI for assisting judicial decision-making.

The Group’s members prioritise both rigorous academic dissemination and the delivery of research that generates tangible societal impact and policy-relevant expertise as evidenced by representation on Ireland’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council, the National Science Advice Forum, and Europol’s Quantum Safe Financial Forum.

As well as its Technology Working Paper seminar series, public and international events are regularly organised by the Group
