Getting Set Up
Below is some useful information to help you get set up with IT Services in Trinity.
As a new staff member in Trinity, the following information will help you get up and running.
Computer account username and password
Your Trinity computer account username and password will give you access to a host of different IT services in College. Some of these services include:
- Computer access
- Staff email
- Staff Wi-Fi
- Online Library services
- Teaching and learning systems
How to get your username and password
The steps to get your username and password are broadly as follows:
- Send all your required documentation to the Human Resource (HR) department
- HR will let us know when you have completed this step
- We will set up your computer account and let HR know the details
- HR will issue you with your computer account username, your initial password, and a staff ID
Staff logging in to the College network for the first time must change their password. Subsequently, you will be required to change your password every 180 days after that.
Do not share your password with anyone, for any reason, at any time. You are responsible for any action carried out under your login.
Your username should not be confused with your email address. Your email address ends in @tcd.ie. For example, 'firstname.lastname@example.org' is the email address whereas 'blogsja' is the username.
How to change password
Staff have several ways in which they can change their password.
Option 1: Office 365 - Self-service password reset tool
This self-service lets you change your password (even if you've forgotten it). You can also unlock a 'locked' account.
Option 2: Using a Windows computer connected to the College network
If you are using a Windows computer that is connected to the College network (either on-campus connection or via VPN), then to reset your password do the following:
- On the keyboard, press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
- Click Change a password.
- Type the old password, then the new password and confirm it.
Option 3: Password Manager
Password Manager is a web-based application that allows you to: change your network password; unlock your network account; and set a new password if your current one has expired.
To keep your account safe, we enforce the following features:
Your account password must satisfy the following conditions:
- be at least 8 characters long
- have a mix of upper and lowercase characters
- include at least one numeric character OR a special character such as ! @ $ % * _ - + = ~
- not include £ € : ? | space
- not include part of your first name, last name or username
- not be the same as any of your previous 24 passwords
Two Step Sign-In (TSSI) is required to access certain services, such as Office 365, when not on the campus network.
When you log into services requiring TSSI, you will be prompted to confirm your identity via a separate method. The most typical way is through a code sent to your mobile phone.

Connecting a device to the College network
You can connect a wide range of devices to the College network - provided they pass certain requirements.
If your device is compatible, then you can submit the 'Network request'. A member of IT Services will then follow up with you to connect your device to the network.
Wired network (On-campus)
When on-campus and provided your device has been connected to the network, you can get internet access through a 'wired' connection between your computer and a network port in the wall.
These network ports are available in most offices and labs.
Wi-Fi network (On-campus)
The staff Wi-Fi service allows you to connect your staff device (computer, laptop, tablet, etc) to the College network via Wi-Fi.
The 'Internet Connect' service is an internet-only connection for staff to connect their personal devices to the internet via Wi-Fi. This connection won't give you access to network services.
Internet access outside of campus
The two most common options for accessing the internet outside of campus would be your home broadband or using your smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Secure remote and mobile working

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A VPN will create a secure connection from your remote location to the College network. This allows you to access network-only services from off-campus.
What services do I need a VPN for?
You will only need a VPN to access the following services:
- Network Files and file storage
- Webauthors making live changes to the webpages
- Trinity business applications:
- FIS (if you prepare POs)
- SITS (client-only, Academic Registry)
- CMIS timetabling
- HR users of SODMS
You won't need a VPN to access lots of other services that are hosted in the 'cloud'. An example would be your email, OneDrive, Teams, etc.
