Software usage policy

All students are advised that they must ensure that any software they are using is appropriately licensed and their use of the software complies with the terms and conditions of the license agreement. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that they are appropriately licensed for all software on the devices they own.

Microsoft 365 Apps for Students

IT Services are pleased to be able to offer all current Trinity students the Microsoft 365 Apps suite of software, free of charge.  Microsoft 365 Apps can be used online or downloaded on up to five devices, including Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. Applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Skype, OneNote, Access, and Publisher. Office 365 also includes OneDrive which is a form of personal cloud storage. Students can use up to 1 TB of storage with a maximum file size of 2GB.

Students can get a copy of SPSS for their own personal computers under the Trinity SPSS site licence.  SPSS is licensed for educational use and not for research, funded by a business or organisation, which would result in commercial gain.

To download the SPSS installation files please visit MyTrinityApps.  During the SPSS installation process you will need the latest SPSS licence code.  The licence code will be made available following acceptance of the terms and conditions of Trinity’s SPSS licensing agreement.

A new licence code will be required in June/July each year in order to continue using SPSS software.  Please see our web pages on how to update the SPSS licence code.

A broad range of SPSS training and support resources are available through the Presidion Academic Portal, which requires you to register using your email address.

Students can get a copy of Mathematica for Windows, Mac or Linux for their own personal computers, or for a Trinity-owed computer they are using, under the Trinity Mathematica site licence agreement. The software can be downloaded from the Wolfram download site by following the relevant link below. You will need to register and will then receive an activation code. When registering you must use your Trinity email address. Details of the terms and conditions of the licence are available on the Wolfram website.


Trinity has a site licence for MATLAB, Simulink and companion toolboxes. The licence covers use for all taught postgraduate & undergraduate students on their personally-owned computers.  The licence is for use in academic research and teaching & learning activity but commercial use of MathWorks products is not permitted under the Trinity site licence agreement. Research Postgraduates who wish to use MATLAB please see for installation instructions.

The Site Licence is funded by departments across Trinity for the current Academic Year.  Based on the number of downloads your department may be contacted and requested to make a financial contribution towards the cost of the renewal of the Site Licence.  You may therefore retrospectively be asked by your department to justify your download of MathWorks products and their usage in your academic studies.


Staff and Research Postgraduates can avail of ArcGIS under the Trinity site licence. Details of the agreement are available on the eduserv website. To obtain a copy of the installation files, Staff and Research Postgraduates must fill out and submit the ArcGIS request form, having first accepted the terms. Submission of the form automatically records an enquiry with the IT Service Desk and they will then email you with the ArcGIS installation instructions within 3-5 working days.

Alternatively all Undergraduates, Postgraduates and Staff can avail of a 1-year license for ArcGIS Desktop. This enables you to install ArcGIS onto a PC in a standalone environment, not connected to the License Server. The license expires 1 year after activation, or when the existing ESRI license expires (July 2017). If you wish to obtain a 1-year licence for ArcGIS Desktop then please submit a request for a 1-year ArcGIS Desktop licence.

If you wish to access ArcGIS in the IT Services Computer Rooms, instructions are available to install and access the software.

Hexagon Desktop Imaging (formerly called Erdas Imagine)

Students can avail of Hexagon Desktop Imaging (formerly called Erdas Imagine) under the College site license. Students must fill out the Erdas copyright acknowledgement form and return it to the IT Service Desk in Áras an Phiarsaigh to obtain a copy of the software.

Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (formerly Imagine)

Azure Dev Tools for Teaching provides tools to departments, faculty, and students to expand their study of software development and testing. These tools include such technologies as Platform SDK, SQL Server, Visual Studio .NET, and Windows Server.

LabVIEW is available for registered Trinity students and staff to install. Please read and accept the LabVIEW licence agreement and you will be provided with the download link and current licence code.

Adobe applications

Applications such as Dreamweaver and Photoshop are available via the trial service at the HEAnet Academic Software Centre. Please see our instructions on using this HEAnet service.
