Changes for macOS support on the Trinity network - February 2021

The following macOS support changes will affect those using Macs on the staff VPN (Virtual Private Network) service at home, or in offices and labs around College.

Support for macOS Big Sur (11.0)

We are happy to announce that our testing of macOS Big Sur (11.0) is complete. This version of macOS can now be connected to the Trinity data network (including the staff VPN service) and Staff Wi-Fi service.

Before you upgrade to macOS Big Sur, please be aware that if your MacBook has an Apple M1 processor*, there may be compatibility issues with certain software.

For example, the Panopto client is not currently supported to work with the M1 processor.

For other software to run with the M1 processor, you may need to install the Rosetta 2 compatibility app.

* The M1 processor is only in certain models of MacBook released since November 2020.

End of support for macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Apple has ended support for macOS High Sierra (10.13) which means that they no longer provide software security updates for this operating system. Continuing to run this version of macOS represents a security risk to your data and the Trinity data network.

For this reason, IT Services is now ending support for macOS Sierra (10.13) for computers connected to the Staff Wi-Fi service or the Trinity data network in offices and labs. 

Third parties such as Microsoft have also ended support for this version of macOS for software and services they provide, including the Microsoft 365 service.

How does this impact me?

If your computer is running macOS High Sierra or an older version of macOS, we strongly encourage you to upgrade your operating system. This will help keep your data secure and ensure that you continue to receive full support from IT Services.

Information on how to upgrade, for free, to a more recent version of macOS can be found on the Apple website. If you continue to run an unsupported version of macOS on the Trinity data network, we may need to disconnect your computer until you have upgraded to a supported version.
