End of support for Basic Authentication in Office 365

15 December 2021

Microsoft recently announced that Basic Authentication, which can be used to capture your username and password in your email software, will be switched-off permanently in 2022.

Basic Authentication is being switched-off as it is an outdated and insecure form of authentication.

In addition to this, Microsoft has also advised that from the 1st January 2022, they will be randomly selecting accounts and temporarily disabling Basic Authentication on those accounts for a period of up to 48 hours.

For the majority of Trinity's staff, this will have no impact on them but if you happen to still be using Basic Authentication to connect to your staff email, IT Services will contact you by email to let you know you need to change your settings.

What does Basic Authentication look like?

In simple terms, Basic Authentication will capture your username and password in one request. Your username and password may even be stored in the application settings.

An example of what a Basic Authentication form would look like is below:

In contrast to this, Modern Authentication will separate and encrypt the connection between your username and password so that the two cannot be matched up.

An example of a Modern Authentication form is as follows:

What to do if you are still using Basic Authentication?

If you are still using Basic Authentication, then from the 1st January 2022 you are at risk of your current email settings no longer working; either permanently or for a period of up to 48 hours.

In the event of this happening, IT Services will not be able to restore your access to Basic Authentication.

To ensure that you are not affected by either the temporary or permanent disabling of Basic Authentication, you should ensure that you only use one of the recommended ways to view your staff email.
