Email Containing Ransomware in Circulation

First posted: Thursday, 11th June 2020, 12:30pm

IT Services have been warned of a significant increase in email traffic containing the Avaddon ransomware, a malware that is being spread through emails with a subject line such as “Your new photo?” or “Do you like my photo?” with an attachment in IMG.jpg.js.zip format. No cases have been discovered in Trinity but we request that staff and students remain vigilant.

This attachment is trying to fool the target into thinking it contains an image file, when in reality it contains a Javascript file which when opened launches a command to download the Avaddon ransomware to your computer. Avaddon will then lock all your files followed by a demand to pay a ransom to unlock them.

Please delete this email should you receive it and report it to the IT Service Desk at the earliest opportunity as it is part of a new worldwide scam campaign.
