Dr Carlo Aldrovandi presented his research on Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif at Manchester University - 10 November 2016

On 10 November 2016, Dr Carlo Aldrovandi presented his research on the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif dispute at the Centre for Jewish Studies, Manchester University, UK.

The seminar discussed the overlapping between theological and nationalist drives at the basis of the struggle for the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif. The main points addressed were:

1 the Islamic and Jewish discourses that mobilize the claims to exclusive ownership of Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif;

2 the issue of indivisibility of the holy site and its connection to the outbreak and development of larger conflict between the two communities in past and more recent times and

3 the effectiveness of alternative faith-related approaches which could be deployed to tackle that dispute and its impact on the Israeli--Palestinian peace negotiations.

The seminar presentation drew upon Dr Aldrovandi's recent field research in Jerusalem as well as a set of interviews he conducted with local and international conflict analysts, members of the al-Waqf, the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement and various Religious Zionist organizations advocating for a Jewish right to pray within the Temple Mount/Haram Al-Sharif compound.
