Field Trip to Geneva – June 2019

From June 11-12, a group of students from our International Peace Studies, Conflict and Dispute Resolution and PhD programmes made our School’s annual field trip to Geneva. On the first day we had a programme facilitated by the UN Information Service which included input from the International Organisation for Migration, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Lab and the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). We were also privileged to hear about the work of the UN at Geneva from the Head of the UN Information Service, Alessandra Velluci. Despite having to navigate very tight security due to several world leaders visiting the same day amid major events for the centenary of the International Labour Organisation, we had a fascinating and open insight into the work of the UN.

Day two took us to the European External Action Service’s delegation to the UN, thanks to the invitation of former IPS student Lisa Hammerle, who interned there over the last months. The focus here was on the EU’s work at the UN Human Rights Council. The trip finished with a thought-provoking guided tour at the splendid Museum of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent.

We were lucky that one member of the group, Christopher Harrington from the CDRS course, is a professional photographer and he shared this images below and on the PowerPoint file with us.
