Belfast Field Trip spotlights a city in transition

On 12th January, 23 students from ISE's MPhil and PhD programmes gathered in Belfast for a packed two day programme of tours and talks designed to highlight the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict, contemporary politics, and grassroots peacebuilding work. The itinerary included:

Orientation briefing in ISE Belfast with Dr. David Mitchell and Dr. Brendan Browne

The Ulster Museum's 'Troubles' exhibit

Panel discussion and Q and A with ex-combatants at Healing Through Remembering, an NGO that facilitates debate on the unresolved issue of dealing with the past

Guided tour of Belfast City Hall

Visits to Titanic Quarter, political murals on the Lower Newtownards Road and the new CS Lewis Square urban regeneration project

Talk and tour by NI Assembly staff at Stormont Parliament Buildings

Visits to west Belfast murals and 'peace' walls

Presentation and walking tour of the troubled Ardoyne 'interface' in North Belfast by the leaders of the R City cross-community youth project
