SummaryAt a roadside dance in Kerry, Bridget rejects Shamus Foley and accepts the proposal of Terry O'Donovan. Shamus becomes embittered and leaves for America where he meets with success. Terry and Bridget are married and when they read of Shamus' good fortune in America they decide to visit the country. By selling their belongings they secure steerage passage. Arriving in New York, they locate in an East Side tenement. Terry finds it hard to find employment and he therefore determines to seek out his old rival, Shamus, who is now an influential political boss. But Shamus scoffs at the unfortunate Terry and holds him up to ridicule. Downhearted, Terry sits on a park bench and the way opens to him to render a service to a passing capitalist. As a result his new friend secures employment for Terry and in later months he becomes prosperous. Through hard work and judicious investments Terry becomes well-to-do and is nominated on the reform ticket for mayor. At this time Shamus is the incumbent and stands for re-election. Terry presents his progressive measures so impressively that he is elected. The time comes for Shamus to retire from office in favour of Terry. A crowd of Terry's friends are on hand to see him take office. Bridget is present and asks Shamus if he will continue to harbour unkind feelings toward them. A spark of his old love is kindled and the ex-mayor, coming to a realisation of Terry's qualities, extends his hand in congratulations. (Adapted from Kalem Kalender 1/11/1912:15).
