Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarships

Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland are committed to attracting the best talent from Ireland and around the world to empower excellence and innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Through our partnership, we are taking steps to further promote diversity and inclusion in Trinity’s STEM undergraduate student population, with a particular focus on women in STEM. Our aim is that students graduating from STEM will enter a richer more diverse environment across science and will pursue a variety of career opportunities in technology and industry.    
Three Ireland is supporting undergraduate scholarships and each scholarship is valued at €20,000 (to be dispensed over the first 4-years of the undergraduate degree programme).

In 2023/24, the scholarships will target undergraduate women*, in their first year of studies at Trinity who resident in Ireland at the time of application, and have accepted an offer of a place on one of the following undergraduate degree programmes in:

School of Computer Science & Statistics
School of Engineering
School of Mathematics
School of Physics  

Or in the following course: 
Chemical sciences  

* Applications from gender-diverse and trans students are eligible.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on 6th October 2023.
No late applications will be accepted so please ensure you click submit on your completed application. Awardees of the scholarships will be informed early in November 2023 of the outcome.

The online application here is very simple It requires some factual information about yourself and your answers to the following:

  • Please outline your academic achievements and any extra-curricular activities that you feel (i) demonstrate your ability and interest in STEM and (ii) your aptitude for your chosen course. [500 words]
  • Please explain how you would be an ambassador for diversity and inclusion in STEM. [400 words]
  • Please explain your motivation(s) for applying for this scholarship and what impact you think it could have for you personally, now and into the future. [400 words].

Terms and Conditions for the 2023 Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarships

Terms and Conditions

  • This scholarship is valued at €5,000 per academic year for a duration of four years and will be applied as a discretionary scholarship for the Trinity undergraduate degree programme that you have accepted and commenced.  
  • Students must be resident in the Irish State for three of the past five years.
  • Students can only be in receipt of one scholarship or bursary awarded by Trinity College Dublin. If you are awarded multiple scholarships or bursaries, you will be awarded the one with the highest value.
  • This scholarship will be paid to you via bank transfer on a monthly basis from November 2023 until May 2024.
  • Your decision to accept a Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship is required by the 14th November 2023 and you are required to formally accept this scholarship offer by submitting the signed letter of offer by email to Dr O'Connor at oconnk33@tcd.ie. A non-response by this date will be considered as declining the offer.
  • A declined or lapsed offer for the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship cannot be reinstated beyond the deadline.
  • There is a firm expectation that admitted scholarship students will attend a ceremony with representatives from Three Ireland, to mark the inaugural award of the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarships.
  • Any student who withdraws, cancels, becomes inactive, is suspended or dismissed from the University will lose their eligibility for the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship. Students must inform email Katie of any of the above by emailing oconnk33@tcd.ie. Students awarded this scholarship will be asked to attend annual check-ins with the Dean of STEM or Katie.
  • If a change in enrolment status is for approved circumstances then request for retention of the scholarship may be done by appeal to the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship Committee. 
  • Admitted Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM scholarship students agree to assist Trinity and Three Ireland with occasional promotional activities. These may include:
    • social media content
    • webinars or activities
    • testimonials – video or written
  • Recipients of the Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship will be required to provide a (300 word personal reflection annually) which outlines their course of study, extra-curricular activities, and the impact that the scholarship is having on your time in college. They may also be asked to provide photographs that will be used in Trinity and Three Ireland promotional materials.
  • Students are asked to prioritise meeting invitations with Three Ireland to discuss their experience on the course and the impact of the scholarship. This may include attending events with Three Ireland and associated supporters.
  • Students will be invited to volunteer to be Student Ambassadors.
  • The Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM scholarship award will be reviewed annually. Payment of the scholarship is contingent on the student fulfilling the above requirements and is also subject to the funding being made available from Three Ireland. The University reserves the right to withdraw, vary or amend any aspect of a scholarship if it is found that an error or mistake has been made by the University.
  • A student who applies for a formal Leave of Absence and is approved by the relevant Committee may retain their scholarship upon return to the same programme at Trinity subject to the availability of funding from Three Ireland.
  • Any material misrepresentation of the facts in the candidate's application and supporting materials, whether discovered during the verification process or later, will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Students who discontinue their course of study must notify the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship Committee by emailing oconnk33@tcd.ie immediately.
  • Applicants should note that failure to comply with any of the above requirements may result in the termination of the scholarship.
  • Please note that you will not receive your stipend payments until the necessary documentation for processing scholarships has been completed and bank details have been uploaded to the student portal on SITS.
  • There is a mandatory requirement for you to supply a Personal Public Services number (PPS). If you do not currently have a PPS number, you will need to apply for one. Please see www.mywelfare.ie for information regarding this.
  • Data Protection 
    Personal data supplied by you in relation to your application will be used by the Faculty of STEM, Trinity Access and Trinity staff involved in the selection process to assess your application for eligibility for the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship Programme. 
    Shortlisted applications will be shared with the Scholarship Committee for the final decision on the awarding of this scholarship. Data will be retained on file for the duration of your studies plus three years, however you have the right to withdraw your application and associated personal data at any time. 
    Personal data relating to the Trinity College Dublin and Three Ireland Connect to STEM Scholarship Programme will be processed for the specified purpose only, in compliance with data protection legislation and the Trinity College Data Protection Policy.
