Panopto

How do I download the caption file from a Panopto session?

Navigate to TCD Ponopto and log in using your TCD user name and password. Open the folder that contains the session you would like to add captions to.

Access the Settings for the Session

Hover your cursor over the session and select Settings.

Choose Captions from the menu on the left and select Download file at the bottom of the page.

Panopto automatically includes time stamps within the transcript. However, with audio only files, time stamps are not necessary and may distract students, so you may want to remove them from the transcript.

Adding and Editing Machine Based Captions in Panopto

Panopto has added the ability to add ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) generated captions to your Panopto sessions. Note that machine-generated captions clearly aren’t the same as human transcription so this is really just a way to generate captions that would be a starting point, meaning they would need to be revised and edited to ensure they are 100% accurate, once generated.

  1. Place the cursor over the title of your recoding to show the edit tab. Click Edit.
  2. Select the Captions tab. Note the Import captions drop down. This is where you will begin. Click on the drop-down.
If captions do not currently exist for this session, you want to import the machine generated captions by clicking Import automatic captions.

Editing Captions:

If your captions do exist and have been processed successfully, you will be able to edit each individual caption by clicking the Edit icon next to the caption.

You can completely delete the caption by clicking the delete trash can icon next to the caption in question.

Note: At any time while making these edits, you can press Shift+Space to play/pause the session playback, while editing captions.

Important

Once you’ve imported/edited your captions, commit the changes by pressing the Publish button on the top right of the Editor or the captions will not save.

Viewing the Captions in the Panopto Player:

To view the captions and change display properties in the player, Click the CC button.

Click the Show Captions button to to view captions with the recording.
