Professor David Coleman
Professor of Oral & Applied Microbiology, Dental Science
Personal Chair, School Office - Dental Science
Biography
David Coleman received his B.A. (Mod.), Ph.D. and Sc.D. from Trinity College Dublin. Joining the School of Dental Science in 1989, he is now Professor of Oral and Applied Microbiology and head of the division of Oral Biosciences. He is a Fellow of Trinity (FTCD) and the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath.), London, member of the Royal Irish Academy (MRIA) and winner of the RIA silver medal for microbiology. Professor Coleman has published over 240 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and book chapters. His research interests focus on translational microbiology including automated minimisation of infection risks in healthcare facilities from water networks, wastewater systems and medical devices, and the population biology, evolution, genomics and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VREs) by whole genome sequencing.

- Title
- An investigation of the role of Staphylococcus aureus colonisation of healthcare workers in nosocomial transmission of S. aureus to patients in an MRSA-endemic setting using whole-genome sequencing
- Summary
- Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that frequently causes serious infections among hospitalised patients. This project aims to investigate how commonly and for how long S. aureus is carried in the noses and mouth/throat of healthcare workers and whether some of these are transmitted to patients and how often. This information can be used to inform national policy on screening and eradication of S. aureus carriage among HCWs to reduce patient infections.

- Title
- An investigation of the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in Irish hospitals using whole-genome sequencing
- Summary
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) is a leading cause of nosocomial infections globally. Ireland has the highest prevalence of VREfm bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Europe but little is known about VREfm molecular epidemiology in Irish hospitals because traditional typing methods are poorly discriminatory. Currently, at-risk patients are routinely screened rectally for VREfm, with subsequent isolation/cohorting of VREfm-positive patients incurring extensive healthcare costs. Little is known about the prevalence of VREfm carriage beyond these at-risk groups or how this contributes to the nosocomial burden of VREfm. This study aims to investigate the true prevalence of VREfm carriage among patients in a large acute Irish hospital and the molecular epidemiology of nosocomial VREfm in Ireland using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) typing methods that provide robust typing of VREfm.
