Dr. Jennifer O'Meara
Assistant Professor, Film Studies

Biography

Dr Jennifer O'Meara joined the School of Creative Arts in 2018 as an Assistant Professor in Film Studies, with a specialism in digital theory and practice. Prior to that, she lectured for two years at the Department of Film Studies at the University of St. Andrews. She also taught at Maynooth University (2015-2016) and in the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, National University of Ireland, Galway (2015).

Dr O'Meara's teaching and research is concerned with the intersections between film and digital media, as well as between critical theory and creative practice: these include audiovisual essays, using digital tools for experiments with screen aesthetics, and film festivals as teaching sites. Her main research and teaching interests relate to digital media; film dialogue, voices, sound and music; performance and stardom; gender; and American independent cinema. Dr O'Meara particularly welcomes inquiries in these areas from prospective research students.

Her research on sound and dialogue includes the monograph Engaging Dialogue: Cinematic Verbalism in American Independent Cinema (Edinburgh University Press 2018) and articles on the relationship between characterization and diegetic music and point-of-audition sound. In 2017, she guest edited a special issue of The Soundtrack on emerging audio-visual media. With regard to digital media, she has also published on political memes in The Velvet Light Trap, on digital fan posters in The Journal of Digital Media Arts and Practice and In Media Res, and on the links between investigative podcasts and documentaries in Frames. To date, her work on performance and stardom has focused on issues of gender, reflexivity and subculture. This has led to studies on Christina Ricci (Celebrity Studies, 2018), Parker Posey (The Cinema of Hal Hartley, 2016) and Cate Blanchett (The Cine-Files, 2014).

Dr O'Meara's current book project, Screening Women's Voices in the Digital Era, will examine the representation and reception of female voices in contemporary screen media, including how digital formats and technologies like Virtual Reality, podcasts and voice-activated assistants are impacting women's voices in more traditional screen formats like cinema.

Current Freshman teaching: JF Introduction to European Cinema; JF American Cinema from the 1930s-1950s; SF European Cinemas; SF Introduction to Digital Media.

Current Sophister and MPhil teaching: Digital Theory & Practice; Digital Storyworlds; Film Costume and Fashion.

Film Department roles (2019/20): Freshman convenor; Sophister convenor; Erasmus/Visiting Students convenor; Columbia Dual Degree strand director.
