- MONOPILE FOUNDATIONS FOR OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES
- Summary
- This project involved a comprehensive experimental program of 1g repeated lateral load tests performed on scaled rigid monopiles installed in sand beds. Firstly, a new mechanical loading system was developed to apply many thousands of repeating cycles of lateral load in different forms to the 1g model, with full control provided over the loading direction (i.e. one-way or two-way lateral loading), amplitude, frequency and waveform shape (sinusoidal, square or haversine). Novel techniques to limit the lateral displacement (rotation) of the monopile under long-term cyclic lateral loading were investigated including: 1, use of concentric rings of small diameter displacement piles around the monopile; 2, installation of four shorter piles, arranged in a cruciform, which attach to the head of the central monopile by way of a grillage. Lateral soil resistance profiles were determined from measured pile bending strain data. Further, an experimental model that takes into account various basic characteristics of the applied lateral load cycles was developed for estimation of the pile's accumulated rotation.

- AXIAL MONOTONIC AND CYCLIC LOADING OF OPEN AND CLOSED-ENDED PILES AND FOOTINGS
- Summary
- This project involved axial loading of reduced scale piles and footings on sand beds insitu. For closed-ended piles in dense sand, static and cyclic axial compression and tension load testing was performed to study the causes of friction fatigue. For open-ended piles in loose and medium-dense sand, the effects of installation method, soil-core development and cyclic loading on shaft resistance mobilisation were investigated. A new design method for estimating the shaft capacity of piles in sand was proposed and compared with measurements made on prototype field-scale piles. Eccentric load testing was performed on model footings having different aspect ratios and embedment depth in dense sand to study the factors affecting the bearing resistance of shallow footings in sand.

- GENERALISED STRESS PATH TESTING OF SAND USING A HOLLOW CYLINDER APPARATUS
- Summary
- This project involved the development of a new hollow cylinder apparatus (HCA), including associated instrumentation, calibration and control systems, which facilitate accurate stress path measurements from the pseudo elastic domain to failure strain levels. The HCA is particularly suited to studying the mechanical behaviour of cross-anisotropic test specimens since both the magnitudes of the three principal stresses and the orientation of the major-minor principal stress axes can be independently controlled. In this project, the plastic yield behaviour of full saturated water-pluviated sand specimens was studied under generalized stress conditions. Using the experimental yield data gathered, some existing yield criteria were investigated to establish whether they provide satisfactory predictions of the onset of plastic yielding in sand deposits under generalized stress conditions for routine geotechnical engineering design.

- WATER CONTENT DETERMINATIONS FOR PEAT AND OTHER HIGHLY ORGANIC SOILS USING THE OVEN DRYING METHOD
- Summary
- There has been much debate in the literature over the past 60 years regarding an appropriate oven-drying temperature for water content determinations in peat and other organic soils. For these soils, several researchers have recommended drying temperatures in the range 60-90 degree Celsius in an attempt to prevent possible charring, oxidation and/or vaporization of substances other than pore water. This experimental project establishes the oven drying temperature range acceptable for routine water content determinations on peat and other organic soils, including a new method developed to relate water content values determined for the same material but on the basis of different oven-drying temperatures.

- Design Approach for Improving Bog Rampart Roads
- Summary
- Investigators: Dr. Eric R. Farrell (Principal Investigator), Dr. B.C. O'Kelly (PhD supervisor) and Dr. Jim McElvaney; and Mr. Juan Pablo Osorio Salas (PhD research student_Colombia). Funding:- Research Programme Fellowships (2007) from the National Roads Authority, Ireland; Postgraduate Ussher Fellowship from Trinity College Dublin and Geotechnical Research Award from the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. The total funding for the project from the National Roads Authority is 136,000. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A vacuum consolidation field test was successfully implemented for a 10 x 10 m area of raised bog, in order to investigate the performance of the method in pseudo-fibrous peat deposits and also to evaluate the viability of this technique for the construction and improvement of roads over peat. The efficiency of two different spacing of prefabricated drain was investigated for the 4-m deep peat deposit. The test was instrumented and monitored for a period of 11 months. Two different vacuum generating systems were also tested during the project. The field data were back-analysed using a range of finite element models incorporated in PLAXIS. Acceptable results were obtained for the ground vertical displacements. The design parameters were determined by means of oedometer tests, indicating that the geotechnical properties of the peat obtained in conventional tests can be used in the design of vacuum consolidation projects. - Determination of Soil Plasticity Using a New Apparatus
- Summary
- Dr. B.C. O'Kelly (Principal Investigator), and Mr. Seyedmasoud Manafighorabaei (Research student_Iran). Determination of soil plasticity is of great importance in geotechnical engineering projects. Consistency of soil can be expressed in terms of Atterberg limits of soils. Liquid limit and plastic limit tests are among the two most regular tests for determination of index properties of fine grain soils. Soil classification of fine grain soils is based on results of Atterberg limit tests. In addition, many engineering properties of soils can be correlated to the results of soil plasticity determination tests. Current standard methods for determination of soil plasticity have several issues that make their results unreliable in many cases. In this research, it is tried to address problems of conventional methods regarding soil plasticity determination, design a new apparatus for determination of liquid limit and plastic limit of soils, and standardise a new test method for determination of soil plasticity with more accuracy and reliability in comparison to conventional methods. Soil consistency is a qualitative phenomenon. In this regard, author?s suggestion for solving the problems related to the determination of soil plasticity is utilisation of qualitative research approach. Accordingly, the author has proposed a new test method and designed a new apparatus (Manafi Apparatus) for determination of soil consistency based on the nature of soil deformation utilising qualitative research approach, referred to as Manafi Method. In this technique, it is possible to determine the workability of soil at Atterberg limits and specify the consistency state of the soil. Ten different soils were selected carefully to cover a wide range of soils plasticity with plastic limits range from 18.6% to 30.8%, and the liquid limits range from 30.3% to 61.8%. The most differences between the results obtained by proposed method and standard methods were 2.4% and 1.9% of water content for liquid and plastic limits correspondingly. The experimental results obtained by designed apparatus confirmed the proposed method and provided more consistent results in soil plasticity determination in comparison to current standard methods (fall cone and thread rolling methods).

- Undrained Triaxial Experimental Investigations and Hyperviscoplastic Modelling of Peat Materials
- Summary
- Dr. B.C. O'Kelly (Principal Investigator), Dr. T. Nagel (cosupervisor) and Ms. Lin Zhang (Research student_China). This PhD research includes two parts, viz. experimental investigation on the undrained mechanical properties of undisturbed fibrous peat and a finite strain constitutive model within a thermodynamically consistent framework based on the experimental results of the tested peat. From the laboratory investigation, nonlinear behaviour with large strain was observed from the loading-unloading tests on peat. The influence of cell pressure, strain rate, stress relaxation on the constitutive behaviour as well as strain recoveries from unloading were investigated. Relaxation tests were carried out for overstress quantification as well as to obtain the equilibrium state. The tested peat was categorised as a rate-dependent material with equilibrium hysteresis. Structural anisotropy was also investigated by testing the undisturbed vertical and horizontal specimens under the same conditions. Although in the proposed model, the structural anisotropy was not included, the experimental data provided the foundation for the future development of anisotropic constitutive models. The observed material behaviour motivated a rheological model comprising four parallel layers, each consisting of elastic, viscoelastic and elastoplastic elements. The proposed hyperviscoplastic model was derived from the entropy inequality. Each part of the model was verified against their analytical solutions. The model parameter fitting started with the rate-independent equilibrium tests, where the hyperelastoplastic model was fitted to the defined laboratory equilibrium test. Two compression-relaxation tests, carried out at different strain rates, were used for the parameter estimation of the rate-dependent hyperviscoplastic model. The hyperviscoplastic model was validated against five strain rate tests under various load cases as well as an undrained triaxial creep test. The finite strain constitutive model derived within a thermodynamically consistent framework showed its versatility in simulating peat behaviour in various load cases by a good agreement of the experimental results. Also, from the process of the deriving the hyperviscoplastic model, it is perceived that it would be easy to extend the current model with more features in a mathematically and thermomechanically consistent manner.
