In 2000 Jim Quinn accomplished a career transition from full-time business executive to full-time academic when he joined the academic staff at the Trinity Business School. He retired from his full-time staff role in September 2018 and has now taken up a new part-time role as an Adjunct Professor.

Jim began teaching both strategic management and marketing in higher education in the mid-1980s while still active in business and has taught diverse groups of MBA students at institutions in Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe. At Trinity he teaches on Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Business in Society modules. His research and publication interests lie in the area of industry and organizational evolution and he currently leads a team of post-doctoral and PhD researchers in this area.  Jim is a former Dean of the Trinity Business School was also the School’s Director of Teaching and Learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Jim Quinn originally studied science and industrial engineering at DIT and Industrial Relations at CIR. He then completed an MBA degree at Henley Management College and a PhD in the area of strategy and change at DCU Business School.

A former Chairman of the Marketing Institute of Ireland, Jim was awarded Fellowship of the Institute in June 2000 in recognition of his services to marketing in Ireland. He has served on the Council of the Irish Academy of Management and has been the Irish representative on the board of the European Academy of Management.

Prior to becoming a full-time academic Jim spent over 25 years working in business in such diverse sectors as food processing, photofinishing, pharmaceutical distribution, the distribution of hardware/building products, marketing communications and private higher education. He has also served on the board on a number of Non-Profit organizations operating in areas such as third world development, church governance, professional representation and higher education.

While at Trinity he continued his business involvements through serving as a non-executive director or consultant in sectors such as marketing services, corporate banking, corporate finance, investment management, food processing, newspaper publishing and the non-profit sector. He has also acted as mentor to both academic and administrative staff within Trinity and to a significant number of senior executives across the private, public and third sectors.
