Make your impact on global healthcare challenges

With a genuine interest in student performance and career development, the MSc Biomedical Engineering team is dedicated to providing high quality support to students in every aspect of the course from the selection process to graduation.

We provide an innovative environment that not only fosters the informal interactions and formal group assignments between our students but also provides access to the technologies and expertise which encourages innovation. In carrying out their research projects, students receive strong support from their supervisors and collaborate with both industry and hospitals. We work with twelve hospitals, leading medical device companies, national and international research centres and universities to provide direct experiences to our students.

Key to this are the physical facilities for carrying out our research and innovation. The MSc in Biomedical Engineering is administered from the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute which officially opened in June 2011. This is a state-of-the-art research facility which redefines the scientific landscape in Ireland and will allow the country to take an international lead in the delivery of quality pharmaceutical and biotechnological programmes.

Feedback from some of the MSc Biomedical Engineering class of 2021/22

'The course pushes you to work harder, the expectations are high but so is the quality of the education provided. (Anon - class of 2021/22)'

'The dissertation was very well designed making it the perfect course for people interested in research.' (Anon - class of 2021/22)

'This course gave me exposure to many fields of biomedical engineering. I would recommend this course who would wish to pursue their career in biomedical engineering.' (Anon - class of 2021/22)

Jemil Saidi - MSc Bioengineering class of 2020/21:

"I applied for the MSc in Bioengineering following the completion of my undergraduate studies in Engineering with Management at Trinity College Dublin which, although provided a strong foundation in engineering principal, plus insight into the business/management side of the field but was not fully aligned with my career goal hence the decision to pursue the MSc. The course had the perfect balance of engineering fundamentals, advanced theories in biomedical engineering and gave students the ability to develop laboratory and clinical research skills. The lectures were very engaging and willing to guide students when needed. Despite the challenges that came with the pandemic, the course group bonded and having the opportunity to work in groups on various collaborative projects made the year less lonely and daunting. I’m glad I chose to pursue the MSc in Bioengineering. Through it I found the most amazing friend group, worked with top researchers in their field for my thesis and it gave me all the necessary tools I needed for my job as a Research Assistant, in RCSI where I’m working on a novel medical device, which has always been my goal."

laurensparmentierLaurens Parmentier - MSc Bioengineering class of 2018/19:

"I really enjoyed getting relevant theory classes which could be applied in several real life interdisciplinary projects. The MSc gave me the opportunity to learn how to work on a scientific project which I'm applying now as a PhD candidate developing a bone tissue engineering scaffold for critical bone defects at Ghent University in Belgium. I would definitely recommend this course to other Engineering graduates."

Dr. Alejandro Lopez Valdes is now a lecturer in the Neural stream on this course. This is what he said of the course in 2012 “My name is Alejandro Lopez. I am an international student from Mexico participating in the Common European Masters Course in Biomedical Engineering. I am now taking my specialization year at Trinity College Dublin at TCBE in the area of neural engineering. As an international student, it has been a great experience to do and share research at TCBE, I have found it an excellent place to develop my scientific skills. To be able to observe the different research approaches of my colleagues is helping me to have a proper orientation of my work in terms of goals, objectives and tasks. My research is focused on the use of Auditory Evoked Potentials towards understanding the development of speech perception in patients that have a cochlear implant. This topic has given me the opportunity not only of increasing my engineering background but also to learn and experience from first-hand dealing with patients and doctors outside of my “comfort zone” (the lab). I have been able to establish a line of communication with Beaumont Hospital’s national cochlear implant program and visited their facilities, not only for a tour but for a complete clinic experience, observing both, the patient assessment as well as the cochlear implant surgery. Meeting the patients and the health care professionals that deal day to day with audition and cochlear implants made me realize the magnitude of the contribution that we can make, even if we are only a small part of the work that needs to be done. It is important to realize that our research has a purpose that is not self-fulfilling and that a complete understanding of our projects comes when we are able to link our research to the real world situations.”

"The part which I enjoyed most about the course was the different modules that were arranged according to a candidate's specialization which played a big role in terms of personal experience, time and pressure management. I have secured a few job opportunities and I strongly believe that Trinity payed a huge role in making my resume look strong for the employers. Personally I also believe that the choice of classmates I had played a big role in my time at Trinity because despite the regional diversity, all of us always operated as one important cog of the bioengineering machine". https://twitter.com/MED3DP/status/889905138147708929

The M.Sc. in Bioengineering gave me exposure to a broad spectrum of bioengineering disciplines, such as Biomechanics, Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Neural Engineering, etc., with the benefit of being taught by the experts in each field. While the course modules taught me a range of applications of bioengineering, the thesis project allowed me to immerse myself in my area of interest, neural engineering.”

“The M.Sc. in Bioengineering in Trinity College Dublin provided a comprehensive overview of how the world of medicine and engineering interact in terms of advancing standards in medical devices and treatments for patients. This bioengineering program provided me with a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts behind the operation of medical devices and how advances in this area can benefit our society. This M.Sc. program was essential for me in terms of providing the necessary understanding behind medical device design and operation and this in turn has contributed to me gaining employment”

“Having the M.Sc. gave me an edge over other candidates when interviewing and looking for employment in the medical device companies. I would highly recommend this course.”
