Michaelmas Term 2020

Campus Engage Community Engaged Learning Online Course

Your students addressing real world problems through the curriculum.

Campus Engage would like to invite you to take part in the very first iteration of our online open course on Community Engaged Learning.

This professional development opportunity is an introductory online programme for teaching staff in higher education, which explores the basic concepts and practical steps on how to integrate community engaged learning into any teaching curriculum. The course is built around a series of video tutorials, solo and group activities, a selection of academic and grey reading material, and  provides online case studies with community partners, students and academics.

The course is 25-hours learner effort and is undertaken over a 6-week period, after which learners can claim their digital badge in Community Engaged Learning from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education (NFETL).

Places are limited for this first iteration - so register now. The course will be available more widely across Irish higher education from late-Spring 2021. For anyone who cannot attend the first iteration, we will maintain a wait-list and get in touch individually about subsequent deliveries of the course.

Registration is now closed

Designing open-book assessment for remote contexts

Facilitators: Dr Jonny Johnston, Dr Cicely Roche & Dr Pauline Rooney, Academic Practice

Academic Practice will be hosting three workshop-style clinics focused on designing open-book assessment for remote contexts. Colleagues are invited to attend one or more of the clinics as appropriate for your own assessment context.

Colleagues are encouraged to register in advance for the clinic and submit any particular comments/questions/reflections in advance.

a) Designing Open-Book Assessments for Remote Contexts (Reports/Essays/Discursive) 23th November, 11.00 – 12.00.
b) Designing Open-Book Assessments for Remote Contexts (Short-Answer/Calculations) 24rd November, 11.00 – 12.00.
c) Designing Open-Book Assessments for Remote Contexts (Competency-based/’Performance’) 25th November, 11.00 – 12.00.

Clinic A is likely best suited to the needs of colleagues working in disciplines predominantly aligned with qualitative/discursive assessments, e.g. those making extensive use of essays, reflective tasks, presentations in their examination context. We suggest this clinic might be of particular interest to colleagues in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Clinic B is likely best suited to the needs of colleagues working in disciplines predominantly focused on quantitative assessment, e.g. those making extensive use of MCQs, SAQs, and calculations in their examination context. We suggest this clinic might be of particular interest to colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering, Maths, and Sciences and colleagues elsewhere assessing calculations or assessing laboratory skills.

Clinic C is likely best suited to the needs of colleagues working in vocationally oriented disciplines who make extensive use of competency-based assessment in their examination context. We suggest this clinic might be of particular interest to colleagues in the Faculty of Health Sciences and professional disciplines e.g. Education/Social Work.
