Update from Librarian and College Archivist to students and staff

25 September 2020

Dear students and staff,

Following the government’s announcement of COVID-19 Level 3 for Dublin last Friday, the Library remains open, continuing the current opening hours as follows to Sunday 11th October;

Library Reading Room opening hours

  • The Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher, and Hamilton libraries are open Monday to Friday 09:00-17:00 (counter hours 10:00-16:00)
  • The John Stearne Medical library is open Monday to Friday 09:00-16:00 (counter hours 09:00-16:00)
  • The Joint Research Collections Reading Room in the Old Library is open Monday, Thursday and Friday 10.30-15.30 (by appointment)

For further details please see our Library website

1937 Postgraduate Reading Room reopening

  • The 1937 Postgraduate Reading Room will reopen on Monday 28th September
  • Opening hours Monday to Sunday 08.00-20.00

Please note that face coverings are mandatory in the Library at all times along with all other COVID-19 health and safety protocols, including two metre social distancing and a ‘keep right’ policy in all spaces.

New Booking System

The Library will launch a new booking system for the modern libraries (Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher, Hamilton, Stearne and 1937) on the Library website on Wednesday 30th September.

From this date, readers can start booking slots for Monday 5th October onwards. Once this system is in place, readers will need to book in advance for access to Library spaces. Capacity limits will be set for each building in line with COVID guidelines and the booking system will be linked to our 3D Maps to help readers find their seats.

Orientation

As part of our ongoing student orientation there are very helpful information sessions in the Library HITS programme. These interdisciplinary taster sessions, which are co-delivered with Student Learning and Development, cover everything from getting started with the Library, academic integrity and critical thinking. They are open to everyone in the university and there is no need to book.

Questions

For further enquiries, please use our Live Chat facility on the Library website, email Library@tcd.ie and a library staff member will get back to you, or contact your subject librarian directly, all details for whom are here.

With enormous thanks to colleagues across the College who are helping us keep the libraries open, and especial thanks to the President of the Graduate Students’ Union with reopening the 1937.

Wishing you, your family and friends all good wishes,

Helen Shenton FRSA, FIIC
Librarian and College Archivist
