Rowing performance staff


Trinity has a wealth of sporting knowledge and expertise, all of which are placed around athletes in a specifically designed structure to suit individual needs. Our staff have international experience and reputation, including supporting athletes at world class and Olympic standard.


  • Richard Ruggieri


    Chief Coach since August 2017. In this short period, Richard has instilled a work-ethic and culture which reinforces the importance of excellence. First year results included the Wylie Cup and Colours vs UCD Gannon Cup. He has led multiple programs at the collegiate and elite levels. Results included collegiate, national and international champions, Olympians and a cadre of coaches.

  • Andrew Coleman


    Andrew has been lead coach since 2006. He has produced crews that have won at Novice to Senior as well as individuals who represented DULBC and Ireland at the World Championships and World University level. Andrew’s attitude to coaching is an athlete centred focus allowing each athlete to get the most from Trinity in academics and rowing.

  • Ross Hamilton Performance Sport Development Officer


    Registered NSCA Strength and Conditioning specialist, Level 1 Coach with British Weightlifting. MA in Natural Science and MSc in Exercise Physiology. Strength and Conditioning lead overseeing recovery, sports performance and physical development. Competitively sailed in the World Cup Tour for five years and campaigned for London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.

  • Laura McCague Sports Medicine Pathway Manager


    PhysiotherapistExperience working across public and private sports sectors. Has an active research role in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, while continuing to work with athletes and teams across the country. Currently manages the sports medicine pathway overseeing athlete injury prevention and rehabilitation support within Trinity Sport.

  • Professor Cathal Moran Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Sports Surgery Clinic


    Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sports Surgery Clinic and the Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He specialises in Knee Surgery and Shoulder Surgery. His sub-specialty interest is in sports injuries, including ACL reconstruction, cartilage injury, meniscus surgery, rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation surgery.

  • Nicholas Mahony Head of Discipline of Anatomy, Course Coordinator of MSc Spors and Exercise Medicine


    Former Irish and British championship winning club rower in both sculls and sweep rowing and as a former Irish lightweight international.

  • Bernard Donne Senior Experimental Officer


    Director of the Human performance lab since 1990. He has delivered general physiological support to an extraordinary number of high level athletes over the years, including many of Ireland’s top Olympians. He has supervised numerous research projects surrounding Human Performance and general health and is very highly regarded in the field.

  • Matthew Dossett Deputy Head of Sport


    Responsible for the delivery of the Strategy for Sport, and the development of performance sport services and structures in Trinity. Matthew is a former national level ski racer and coach, and holds a 1st class degree in Sport Science form the University of Sunderland (UK), and an MSc in Sports Management from Northumbria University, Newcastle (UK).
