She’s only 23, but current Irish International and Trinity Meteors Basketball Player Edel Thornton has had packed a lot into her career already – from college basketball in the USA with Quinnipiac University, representing the Irish International basketball team at senior women’s level, playing for Brunell Ladies Basketball Club and now playing with Trinity Meteors. Edel Thornton is very much looking forward to her upcoming season with Trinity Meteors and being back playing in the Super League for the 2020 / 2021 season.

Speaking about Division One ‘Player of the Year’ Award 2020 Thornton says, “To win the award was a great surprise to me actually, however I think it is a testament to the work ethic and consistency of myself and our team across the year.”

This work ethic and consistency from Edel and the Trinity Meteors team resulted in a promotion to the Basketball Ireland Super League 2020 / 2021. Commenting on playing in the Super League this season, Edel says, “Like any new team in the league I know we will be underestimated by many of our opponents, and with that I think we have a huge opportunity to take some people by surprise. I truly believe we can win quite a lot of games this season with our young squad and I’m very excited to be taking the jump with the team we have assembled for this year!”

Preparation for the upcoming season was different this year due to Covid-19 but Edel and the team soon got used to the health and safety measures in place, “Training after lockdown was a bit nerve-wrecking if I’m quite honest. As the weeks went on, we got more comfortable with the guidelines, using hand sanitiser every dead ball is becoming second nature to us now! Apart from guidelines we’re working very hard when we’re on the floor - we’re getting used to playing together and working towards our common goals!”

Thornton is relishing the chance compete against DCU Mercy for their first Super League game of the season, “DCU were a major force last season and have a huge reputation in the super league so who better to test ourselves against right out of the gates. It will be a tough matchup but when you’re at the top-level no game will ever be easy so we’re ready to put our best foot forward starting Saturday (17th October) and carrying it on throughout the year.”

Trinity Meteors basketball club currently compete in the Basketball Ireland women’s Super League, the 2020 / 2021 season will tip off against DCU Mercy on Saturday, 17th October at Trinity Sport Centre.
