Dublin University Harriers and Athletics Club Make History as they win Gold at the Intervarsity Road Relay Championships

DUHAC’s Ladies A team came first at the intervarsity Road Relay Championships in UCD at the weekend

Published: Nov 18th, 2019

Members of Dublin University Harriers and Athletics Club (DUHAC) have claimed gold in the first event of the Irish University Athletics Association calendar, the intervarsity Road Relay Championships. The competition was held at UCD on Saturday, 16th November and involved teams of athletes running legs of varying lengths of a one-mile loop.
The ladies’ A team claimed Trinity’s first win since the competition’s inception in 1987, coming first ahead of DCU and UCD. Finishing in a time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds, the team consisted of Cliona Murphy, Caron Ryan, Sorcha McAllister and Eavan McAllister. Caron Ryan attacked the front of the field and passed over to speedy Sorcha McAllister in fourth place. The ex-captain managed to close the gap, overtaking UCD and UCC and making easy work for current captain Cliona to chase down the final obstacle of DCU's 2 miler and pass on to Eavan McLoughlin on the anchor leg. The Sligo woman did a superhuman job of holding off a European 800m bronze medallist to bring home the gold for DUHAC. The men's A team ran a TCD record time of 46.50 in eight place, four places better than last year's standing.
Commenting on the win, DUHAC Ladies Captain and Trinity Sport Scholarship student Cliona Murphy said: “We are delighted and so proud of all our athletes, especially the ladies' historic victory. It was a fabulous team on the day, despite being hit by various injuries we still managed to pull off the win. It was a great first intervarsity event, and we're looking forward already to indoors in February and Cross Country in Cork in March, where we hope to put in more strong performances.”
She continued: “Big thanks to our coach Iain, who puts so much time and effort into these athletes and has been instrumental in the rise of DUHAC's medal haul over the last few years. Thanks also to new track coach Geraldine who made it out to support today, and to all those who lent a helping hand during the day.”
