Three Trinity Sport Scholarship students – Rachel Huijsdens, Alison Blaney and Sorcha Tiernan will represent Ireland at the under 20 European Basketball Championship in Kosovo from Saturday, 3rd August.
In May, Ireland under 20’s Head Coach, Martin Conroy announced the final roster of 12 players for this year’s championship which included the three Trinity students. Sorcha Tiernan, a first year MSISS student had a very successful year captaining the Trinity freshers’ team and winning the women’s super league young player of the year in April has been announced as Vice-Captain for the under 20’s team. She will be joined by first year dental science student Alison Blaney and first year medical student Rachel Huijsdens for the Championship. All three Trinity Sport scholarship students have previously represented Ireland on the international stage at various levels.
Announcing the squad, Conroy said: “Making this selection was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make as a basketball coach. We started with an extremely talented panel and they made it really difficult for the coaches to select the final 12”, he said. “This team brings everything that we need to go out and win games in Kosovo.”
Michelle Tanner, Head of Sport at Trinity Sport, commented “We are very privileged and honoured to have three Trinity Sport Scholarship students representing Ireland on the European stage. We are very proud of Rachel, Alison and Sorcha at Trinity Sport and wish the Irish U-20’s women’s team every success at the upcoming European championships in Kosovo.”
The Championship tips off on Saturday, 3rd August for the Irish team with their initial group games against Ukraine and Great Britain in group B. More information and all results from the U20’s Championships can be found here.
