On form Sorcha looks forward to donning the green jersey

This is a big weekend for third year Human Genetics student and Trinity Sport scholar Sorcha McAllister. That’s because it’s the first time she will be representing Ireland at a major championship.
The competition in question is the European Cross Country Championships, taking place in Tilburg in Holland. “I’m looking forward to it but I’m a little nervous!” says Sorcha, who flew out to Holland this morning and competes on Sunday.
Sorcha will represent Ireland at U23 cross country level, a distance of 6.3km. It was a goal in itself to qualify for the event.
“My aim for this season was to get to this point. There are six members on the U23 team and four are needed to score for the team so I would love to be a scoring member and contribute to our overall result. It would also be great to make the top 35 but we'll see how it all goes.”
Sorcha’s form has been excellent this year. “This season has definitely been my best yet. I have been training well and most importantly I have been really enjoying it.
“In terms of results I won bronze in the 3,000m at the IUAA Indoor Championships in Athlone and I won gold in the IUAA Outdoor Championships in Belfast. The DUHAC ladies also received bronze in the IUAA cross country championships hosted by Trinity where I was the first finisher for the team.”
Outside of Trinity, Sorcha has been performing strongly for her club too. “I was the All-Ireland U23 1,500m indoor champion and followed this up with a silver medal in the national U23 1,500m outdoor championships for my club, Westport AC.”
Although she’s bound to be a bit nervous facing into her first major competition representing her country, a least there’ll be a few familiar faces in Tilburg to cheer her on.
“There will be quite a few members of DUHAC over there supporting as well as my parents!”
