Sports scholar Conall goes for a run in the sun

What better way to escape the winter blues than with a sunny sojourn in the Canary Islands?
That’s exactly what athletics sports scholar Conall Hayes has lined up over the coming days.
While the rest of us readjust back to work, school, college, Conall is heading off to Tuineje, on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. However it’s not a holiday for the second year Medicine student but a warm weather training camp.
“I’ll be there from January 8th to 13th. Most of the group is staying until the 19th but I have to be back for the start of the semester.”
The reason for the camp is to get some good quality training done in advance of the track and field season which begins in May.
“Consistency is key during the winter months,” Conall says, “and I think this will be a great opportunity to continue to build on my aerobic base.
“The indoor season, which runs from about late January to early March, follows shortly after the camp and although it's nice to run fast indoors, the real emphasis of the camp is getting us geared at peaking for the outdoor season.”
The camp will consist of about 12 athletes in total, some of whom Conall knows from his training group.
“This year will be my first in the U23 category so I think Fuerteventura will be a good opportunity to get to know some of the people I'll be competing against over the coming three years!”
