New high-performance gym an ‘amazing facility’

An “amazing facility”, a “fantastic opportunity”, “looks awesome”. These are just some of the comments that have been used to describe Trinity Sport’s new high-performance gym located in the Sports Centre.

The facility is currently available to all student athletes on a high-performance pathway. With performance being a key focus in the strategy for sport, infrastructure projects such as this are vital.

According to Matthew Dossett, Deputy Head of Sport: “We’re delighted to have launched the performance gym, which is part of a larger series of enhancements and reconfigurations currently underway in the Sports Centre. 

“Our ability to support athletes and teams on the high-performance pathway, along with the scholarship programme and other talent initiatives, has been constrained in the past due to facilities. By addressing the need for a more fit-for-purpose high-performance area, we have also reduced the strain and demands on the main gym space which we’ve received great feedback about.”

One of those keeping a watchful eye over the student athletes who train in the new area is strength and conditioning coach Ross Hamilton.

Before completing his masters in exercise physiology Ross was a student athlete himself, having played U20s rugby in Trinity followed by an international sailing career. So he’s well placed to understand the particular mindset he’s dealing with.  

While ‘strength and conditioning’ has become a bit of a buzz-phrase of late, the benefits this type of training brings are tangible.

“It increases chances of success,” says Ross. “When trained for the tasks they must complete on the pitch or wherever, these students will move better, move more and move faster than those who are less prepared.”

You don’t just have to take his word for it though – the results speak for themselves.

“For most sports it can reduce injury – last season the men’s rowers had no injuries of any kind after starting a strength and conditioning program,” says Ross.

This is echoed by DUBC’s Development Officer Charlie Cunningham. “The instruction and guidance from Ross has seen all of the rowers improve massively. One in particular has gone from extremely limited movement and balance to comfortably lifting heavy weights. The rowers are thriving during these sessions and the rate of improvement is simply mind blowing.”
