Key Facilities

Together with the key assets listed below we have full access to the multi-million euro microscopy facility, the Advanced Microscopy Lab. The CRANN Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (AML) is a custom designed, 6,000 square foot facility, located in the Trinity Technology and Enterprise Campus. The AML is located close to Grand Canal Quay, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the main TCD campus, in the district dubbed “emerald valley” by the IDA.

Brabender Plastograph - RONDOL Melt Press

BRABENDER PLASTOGRAPH is used to melt process polymer composites up to 500 °C and Torque of 200Nm at 40 - 70g depending on sample density. Resulting composites can be pressed into varying sized (0.1 - 5mm) sheets suitable for mechanical and thermal analysis techniques.
NANON NANON Electrospinner
Used for the electrospinning of synthetic polymers, biopolymers and polymer ceramic composite materials into non woven nanofibers (25-2000 nm) with high surface areas.
SEPA Bench Scale MF, UF, NF and RO Unit (GE SEPA CF II)
The Sepa CF II membrane cell system is a lab scale cross flow filtration unit that provides fast and accurate performance data with minimal amounts of membrane, product, expense or time. MF, UF, NF and RO processes can be carried through the system. Typical application includes processing of biological and biopharmaceutical liquids, concentration of fruit juices and extracts, desalination of brackish water or seawater and municipal or industrial water and wastewater purification.
pervaporation Bench Scale Pervaporation Unit
Bench scale pervaporation unit can be used to dehydrate organic solutions or to remove trace organics from aqueous solutions. Pervaporation is a selective membrane operation which is driven by a chemical potential difference across the membrane in which the feed (which is the retentate) remains in the liquid phase whereas permeate comes out in the form of vapour.
TGA Thermogravemetric Analysis (TGA - Pyris 1 PerkinElmer)
TGA is used to measure the thermal stability of materials by recording weight loss with increasing temperature. Temperature range from 30 to 1000°C at scanning rates from 0.1°C to 200°C/min in air or nitrogen atmospheres.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC 4000 PerkinElmer)
DSC is used to measure thermal events in formulation ingredients or polymer systems such as Glass Transition (Tg) and Melt Transitions (Tm) which may affect the performance of the finished product. Temperature ranges from -100 to 400°C at 0.01 to 200°C/min available.
Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA - Diamond PerkinElmer) Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA - Diamond PerkinElmer)
DMA is used to measure the Storage/Loss Modulus and Tan Delta values of polymer systems at temperature ranges from -150 - 400°C at multiple frequencies from 0.01 - 10Htz.
Gel Permeation Chromatography (Waters GPC) Gel Permeation Chromatography (Waters GPC)
GPC is used to determine the Molecular Weight Range and Polydispersity Index of polymers over a range of temperatures and solvent types through RI and UV techniques.
FTIR Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (Nexus Nicolet FTIR)
FTIR can determine the molecular structure of a range of materials from characteristic absorption bands and can detect changes in structure based on spectral changes. Transmission, Reflection and ATR techniques available and use of Materials Database Library match for material analysis and identification.
Dynamic Dynamic Contact Angle
Used to calculate the surface energy and contact angle of materials using liquid(s) of known surface tension via a static sessile drop technique.

Use for testing Surface and Volume Resistivity to EN 61340-5-1 and ESD-S11.11-1993 standards.
Volume/Surface Resistivity (8009 Kiethley Test Fixture) Mechanical Analysis (Zwick Roell - Instron)
Twin and single column mechanical machines for Standard Tensile Analysis with 100N and 2.5kN load cells. 90˚ Peel Testing and Surface Friction analysis techniques also available.
Oxygen Permeation Analyser (Systech Illinois - OTR) Oxygen Permeation Analyser (Systech Illinois - OTR)
Permeation Analyser allows for the determination of Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) over a range of temperatures, humidity and flow rates for a wide range of polymer films.
Melt Flow Index MFI (Karg Industritechnik) Melt Flow Index MFI (Karg Industritechnik)
Used for the determination of the MFR value in g/10 min of polymer materials through ASTM D 1238, ISO 1133 and similar standards.
Thermal Conductivity (Armfileld HT10XC Transfer Unit) Thermal Conductivity (Armfileld HT10XC Transfer Unit)
The Armfiled HT10XC is used to determine the heat transfer through a range of polymer systems.
Viscometer (Brookfield DVI-Prime) Viscometer (Brookfield DVI-Prime)
Measures viscosity and temperature of fluid systems over a range of torques and temperatures via different spindle setups.
3D Printer(Orion Delta Desktop) 3D Printer(Orion Delta Desktop)
Printing polymer prototypes with standard features including the heated build surface for multi-material capability and stand alone printing.
Filament Extruder(Filabot Wee) Desktop Filament Extruder (Filabot Wee)
The Filabot Wee provides the luxury of an industrial sized extruder right on your bench top, capable of extruding polymer filament for 3D printing.
Shore Hardness Shore Hardness
Measure of Shore D hardness of polymer surfaces.
