Overview

The aim of this inter-disciplinary programme is to provide an opportunity for students to develop a sound academic base to their practice of dementia care and to critically explore and critique dementia care services. This programme endeavours to provide those who wish to advance their careers with the necessary skills for advancing knowledge, initiating and encouraging innovation, and leading and developing their practice, thus enabling them to achieve their highest potential in both their academic and professional lives.

Structure & Delivery

This fulltime taught M.Sc. in Dementia is a one year theory programme comprising of six modules and a dissertation. Lectures usually start in mid September each year and the course runs for one calendar year. Small classes facilitate the opportunity for students to engage in interactive lectures, discussions and debate. Focusing on the development of critical analysis, reflection, research and presentation skills helps students advance their knowledge of practice and research applied to their area of healthcare. Students form small study groups to provide mutual peer support and arenas for discussion and debate. Students can attend our annual interdisciplinary research conference, regular research days, seminars, data analysis clinics and learn about the latest research and practice developments from international and national experts.

Course Content

The programme includes six modules all with 10 ECTS weightings. Students must also complete a Dissertation which has an ECTS weighting of 30 credits. In order to be awarded the M.Sc. in Dementia students must successfully complete 90 ECTS. Assessment consists of written assignments and online activities.

Candidates may apply to study on a full-time basis and take all modules in one year. Should the candidate choose NU7806 Clinical Practice module however, the M.Sc. course must be taken over two years, part-time.

Entry Requirement

International applicants must:

  • A minimum of one year’s professional experience in supporting persons with dementia within the past two years.
  • normally hold an upper second class honours degree in a relevant discipline (candidates with relevant, and significant, experience as professional practitioners in the field of dementia care may be considered with a lower class degree or equivalent)
  • Or otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.
  • For all applicants whose first language is not English meet language requirements (see below).

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present one of the following qualifications in the English language:
