Key Recent Developments in Tort Litigation

The courts have handed down a huge number of highly important decisions, on such matters as the duty of care of public authorities, the use of certificates by architects and engineers in construction projects, the calculation of damages in wrongful death claims, professional negligence claims against lawyers and doctors, the role of juries in defamation proceedings and the obligations of employers at common law and under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. The Value of Establishing Medical-Legal Partnerships to Serve Vulnerable Populations

Guest Speakers: Prof Jonel Newman and Melissa Swain of the University of Miami, School of Law. Medical and legal service providers working together have had demonstrable  success in reducing health inequities and preventable illnesses in children and other  vulnerable populations, including immigrants and refugees, and persons from  impoverished and isolated communities. In the United States, 292 health provider agencies, 152 civil legal aid agencies, 51 law school clinics and 71 pro bono provider agencies have established Medical-Legal Partnerships to address legal needs that adversely affect health. Recently, Canada and Australia have adopted this multidisciplinary model to address the legal needs of children and families living in poverty. [More]

Prison Litigation

The Irish Penal Reform Trust and the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin will co-host a conference on the topic of prison litigation.

This conference forms part of a Europe-wide project towards building a Prison Litigation Network among practitioners and researchers working to defend prisoners' rights across EU Member states. This conference will be of interest to solicitors, barristers, judiciary, academia, law students. [More]

Modernising Copyright in the EU Digital Single Market

The School of Law at Trinity College Dublin, together with the Irish Centre for European Law (ICEL), will host a workshop on the ongoing modernisation of copyright laws undertaken by the European Union. The workshop consists of four panel discussions on still unsettled issues of European and national copyright laws. The workshop aims at providing an up-to-date overview and an analysis of various problems Europe and its member states are facing while attempting to modernize the existing laws and make copyright fit for purpose in the Internet age. The program seeks to balance the views of practitioners, academics, industry and copyright holders.  [More]

The Structure of Private Law and the Role of Primary Liabilities
Guest Lecture by Professor Ben McFarlane

Rules of contract, tort, and property are rightly seen as forming the core of private law. Such rules can be seen as recognising the primary duties that we may come under to each other. The function and justification of those rules may however depend on less prominent doctrines, often equitable in origin, that instead impose primary liabilities. The aim of the lecture is to consider the nature and role of such liabilities, by focussing on the place of unjust enrichment and estoppel in the structure of private law. [More]

Alongside this, fast internet and the increasingly wide use of smartphones and portable devices has enabled users to exchange and easily share these files. Yet, the body of law that has traditionally aimed to ensure an economic incentive and reward to content creators and producers - broadly defined - has suffered for more than fifteen years from an identity crisis.

The Use and Abuse of Science in the Court: Public Lecture by Dr. Itiel Dror

This lecture will address cognitive bias amongst forensic examiners, and how to minimise that bias to improve forensic analysis.

Dr. Itiel Dror obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University. He is currently the Senior Cognitive Neuroscience Researcher at University College London. Dr. Dror’s scholarship focuses on researching human performance and cognition in a number of expert domains. His findings have been featured in both Science and Nature. Dr Dror has revolutionised the forensic science domain by showing that forensic examiners are biased in their scientific work, and his procedures and best practices for minimising those biases are now implemented across the globe.   • Changing Ireland, Changing Law: Irish Research Council awarded to TCD Law School, DIT School of Languages, Law and Social Sciences and Public Interest Law Alliance

In March 2015, Prof Ivana Bacik and Dr. Mary Rogan were awarded an 'Engaging Civic Society' award by the Irish Research Council under the 'New Foundations' grant scheme for participating in research led by Dr Mary Rogan along with the Public Interest Law Alliance, for the project 'Changing Ireland, Changing Law'. This project will involve a series of public events and will produce an edited collection through collaboration between DIT, TCD, civil society groups, Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI), the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI). The lead civil society partner is the Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA). Additional funding for this project has also been obtained by Prof Bacik from the Trinity College Equality Fund, and the Arts and Social Sciences Benefaction Fund within College. [ More ]
