The Value of Establishing Medical-Legal Partnerships to Serve Vulnerable PopulationsGuest Speakers: Prof Jonel Newman and Melissa Swain of the University of Miami, School of Law. Medical and legal service providers working together have had demonstrable success in reducing health inequities and preventable illnesses in children and other vulnerable populations, including immigrants and refugees, and persons from impoverished and isolated communities. In the United States, 292 health provider agencies, 152 civil legal aid agencies, 51 law school clinics and 71 pro bono provider agencies have established Medical-Legal Partnerships to address legal needs that adversely affect health. Modernising Copyright in the EU Digital Single MarketThe School of Law at Trinity College Dublin, together with the Irish Centre for European Law (ICEL), will host a workshop on the ongoing modernisation of copyright laws undertaken by the European Union. The workshop consists of four panel discussions on still unsettled issues of European and national copyright laws. The workshop aims at providing an up-to-date overview and an analysis of various problems Europe and its member states are facing while attempting to modernize the existing laws and make copyright fit for purpose in the Internet age. The Use and Abuse of Science in the Court: Public Lecture by Dr. Itiel DrorThis lecture will address cognitive bias amongst forensic examiners, and how to minimise that bias to improve forensic analysis. Dr. Itiel Dror obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University. He is currently the Senior Cognitive Neuroscience Researcher at University College London. Dr. Dror’s scholarship focuses on researching human performance and cognition in a number of expert domains. His findings have been featured in both Science and Nature. Dr Dror has revolutionised the forensic science domain by showing that forensic examiners are biased in their scientific work, and his procedures and best practices for minimising those biases are now implemented across the globe. - Changing Ireland, Changing Law: Irish Research Council awarded to TCD Law School, DIT School of Languages, Law and Social Sciences and Public Interest Law Alliance
In March 2015, Prof Ivana Bacik and Dr. Mary Rogan were awarded an 'Engaging Civic Society' award by the Irish Research Council under the 'New Foundations' grant scheme for participating in research led by Dr Mary Rogan along with the Public Interest Law Alliance, for the project 'Changing Ireland, Changing Law'. This project will involve a series of public events and will produce an edited collection through collaboration between DIT, TCD, civil society groups, Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI), the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI). The lead civil society partner is the Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA). Additional funding for this project has also been obtained by Prof Bacik from the Trinity College Equality Fund, and the Arts and Social Sciences Benefaction Fund within College. [ More ]
