Precious and energy critical metal zonation at the Caribou deposit.

Project details

Precious and energy critical metals occur as trace constituents in a wide range of base metal sulphide deposits. They are commonly recovered as by-products of the principle mined metals (e.g. Zn, Pb, Cu). The main factor controlling the total metal recovery is the efficiency of ore processing that may allow for the production of higher-purity concentrates. The most crucial link of this mineral processing chain is the comminution (crushing and grinding) circuit. With tailored adjustments, this may be able to produce liberated minerals that subsequently improve the efficiency of downstream processing and the recovery of precious and energy critical metals.

The Caribou deposit is a highly-zoned Zn-Pb Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) deposit situated in the Bathurst Mining Camp, Canada. It is known for its very fine-grained massive sulphides, a characteristic that poses a major challenge for efficient metal recovery. Through a combination of detailed sampling, bulk geochemistry, microscopy and geometallurgical tests, this project aims to study the zonation of major and trace elements in the ore body, and also understand the association between the base metal targets and the recovery rate of the precious and energy critical metals.

Postgraduate personal details

I am an MSc researcher in the Raw Material Spoke of the Irish Centre for Applied Geosciences (iCRAG). My background includes economic geology, geochemistry and structural geology. 
In 2015, I graduated from the University of Athens (Greece) with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Geoenvironment. For my undergraduate dissertation, I worked on samples of auriferous quartz veins in the Kallianou area which is located in Euboea, Greece. For this project, my focus was on mineral identification by reflected-light petrography and in-situ SEM analysis.
