Research

Research

My research continues to focused on three areas: (1) Bryozoology; (2) Use of building materials in Ireland; (3) History of geological studies in Ireland.

(1) I am most interested in the systematics, taxonomy and paleobiology of Paleozoic bryozoans as well as the relationship between their skeletal structure and the biological functions of such elements. Recent studies have examined the relationship between epibiontic bryozoans and cephalopods, and boring organisms associated with bryozoan hosts. Currently research is focussed on the Bryozoan Skeletal Index (BSI) and addressing various questions pertaining to Paleozoic ocean chemistry, nutrients and skeletal structures that affected Paleozoic bryozoans. Revision of the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology (Order Fenestrata) is ongoing.

(2) I have long-term research expertise on the use of building and decorative stone, and my books include The Building Stones of Dublin (1993; 2nd edition, in press) and the co-edited volumes The Geology of Ireland: county by county (2009), and Making Victorian Dublin (2019). The latter documented the geology, architecture and use over time of the seminal Museum Building in Trinity College Dublin that dates from 1857 (https://makingvictoriandublin.com). I have published academic papers and book chapters on Irish dimension and decorative stone in national and international journals, and recently advocated for the adoption of two important Irish stone types, Connemara Marble and Valentia Slate as Global Heritage Stone Resources, a designation accorded by the International Union of Geological Sciences. I teach and contribute to post-graduate university courses and lectures to NGOs and have lectured at international conferences on stone and its use. Currently I am the Principal Investigator of the project Stonebuilt Ireland (2018-2022) which is mapping and documenting historic and current stone use in the built environment across Ireland (https://stonebuiltireland.com). Sponsored by the Irish Research Council, the Geological Survey Ireland, and the Office of Public Works, this has contributed to the EuroLithos project and will lead to the development of a web-based interactive database of Irish quarry, stone and building and architectural records that will aid future conservation and further research on the built environment.

(3) I am interested in the history of geology and science, particularly in biographical aspects of Irish scientists. A long-term project is an in-depth assessment of the life and work of the geophysicist John Joly (1857–1933). I am a member of the International Commission on the History of the Geological Sciences (INHIGEO).

Geological Museum and outreach

As Curator of the Geological Museum I am responsible for a significant collection of rocks, minerals and fossils which have been assembled over several centuries. The Geological Museum is currently located in Unit 24 in TTEC and its collections are used for research and a selection are on display. The Museum is opened for various events including Culture Night and Heritage Week or by appointment. Further details are available at the links Geology Museum and Trinity Geology Museum.
