Title of Project

M.Sc. project (2 years) on magma evolution reconstructed from the volcanic fill of the Sudbury Basin.

Project details

The project involves reconstructing the magma through analysis of ‘andesitic’ clasts found at the 1.85 Ga Sudbury impact crater of Ontario, Canada. This will involve 8 weeks of field work to map out feeder dykes and sills, complete two transverses and collect samples to analyse back in Dublin. The project also involves mapping through Iolite using trace elements and writing DRS scripts to improve the quality of the maps.
The work will be done as part of the expanding Kamber research group and this particular Masters project is part of a 4 person research team looking at the post impact volcanism associated with the Sudbury Impact.

Name of supervisor

Prof. Balz Kamber

Postgraduate personal details

I graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2013 with a B.A. Mod in Geology. My undergraduate dissertation was the product of six weeks mapping the area to the South of Sant Corneli in the Llieda region of the Pyrenees. I also completed a lab project in my final year analysing zircons and apatites from Ordovician volcanic layers from North America.
