Incoming Erasmus and Visiting Students 2018-19

How to register for modules in the Department:

  1. Only the modules listed below are available to incoming Erasmus and Visiting students. Some of these modules have limited availability.
  2. Students should first contact the relevant lecturer requesting permission to take a module.
  3. If permission is granted, students should go to Mary or Sinéad in the French dept. office (room 4109) with a print out of the acceptance email and ask to be put in a class group.
  4. Students taking modules in the French department go to Dr Hanrahan's office during his office hours to have their module registration form signed.
  5. Students of Orléans, Paris 3, Bordeaux Montaigne and Lyon 2 should go to Dr Hanrahan's office during his office hours to have their learning agreement and any other Erasmus documentation signed.

FR2008 Oral and Written French (10 ECTS, MT and HT) 3 hours p.w.
Content: B1 level course on French grammar and expression, written and oral
Assessment: 6 continuous assessment exercises; 8 x online grammar quizzes; 1 x oral exam (HT); 1 x 1.5-hour Translation exam (MT); 1 x 1.5-hour composition exam (HT)

FR4037 Counter-revolution, extreme right(s) and fascism in French culture and politics, 1870-1945

FR4048 French Cinema: Representing Experience
This course examines the treatment in French film of a variety of themes, notably childhood, memory, perception of women, representation of the past, constructions of identity, love and desire, colonialism, consumerism and conflict. It covers a range of genres e.g. War film, film noir, thriller, cinéma du look and heritage film. Directors covered include Renoir, Melville, Truffaut, Godard, Besson, Lamorisse, Haneke, Dassin, Chéreau, Corneau.

Content: This course analyses the representation of love and desire in the works of Marguerite de Navarre, Pierre de Ronsard, Michel de Montaigne and in the film Le Retour de Martin Guerre (Daniel Vigne, 1982).
