PhD Candidate Jane O'Connell awarded INTO Educational Research Bursary
PhD Candidate and school principal Jane O'Connell has been awarded an INTO Educational Research Bursary as featured in the January/February 2020 INTO 'InTouch' Magazine. The award ceremony took place at the annual INTO Educational Conference in Kilkenny in November 2019.
Supervised by Dr. Ann Devitt, Jane's ongoing PhD research is entitled 'Is Tusa an Múinteoir: Engaging Students and Parents as Learners of the Irish Language in English-medium Primary Schools'. The project seeks to empower student and parent engagement with the Irish language by creating meaningful domains of use for Irish as second language (L2) for children and parents in a primary school context.
Through innovative use of ICT, and structured peer tutoring in term 1, the pupils become the experts or lead learners and share their language learning with parents at home in term 2 and beyond through simple language activities and sharing their Irish language activities online with parents. The Is Tusa an Múinteoir Irish language learning project is adaptable, replicable, sustainable and could be implemented in a variety of class levels in any primary school context.
