What is a Dental hygienist?
The dental hygienist provides preventative oral care to both
children and adults including those with special needs in
collaboration with a registered dentist in a clinical setting. This
includes treatments to prevent or control periodontal (gum)
disease and dental decay, advice and counselling in relation to
lifestyle habits such as diet and smoking. The dental hygienist
also provides oral health education to both individuals and
groups of people and can be involved in the planning, delivery
and evaluation of oral health promotional programmes. The
dental hygienist works within the dental team and with other
groups of health care workers to provide a holistic approach to
patient care.
Is this the right course for you?
If you have an interest in working in oral health, and particularly
preventative oral health, then this course is right for you. You
will need to be able to develop good patient care skills, so
an empathic personality and good communication skills are
important. You need to be a good team player and show initiative
to achieve the best for people in your care.
