Tuesday 11th December WiSER Lecture

” Transitioning from post-doc to a leadership role; aspirations versus reality”
The career progression of post-doctoral research fellows at Imperial College London

Dr. Bergin will deliver the lecture on soon to be published quantitative data collected from Imperial College London examining the career aspirations of post-doctoral research fellows versus the reality of their next career move. The data was collected through two large scale surveys, the first of the post-doctoral staff in the three faculties at ICL (Natural Science, Engineering, and Medicine), the second from all  principal investigators (in the same faculties) requesting information on the destination of their last 5 post-doctoral employees. The resulting data was analysed by gender.

Imperial College London, where Dr. Bergin was based for three years, is a world leading research and teaching institution ranked 6th in the world QS university rankings.

European Research Council: Strategies for Incorporating Gender Policy in Research

Identified by Time magazine as one of Europe’s most influential women in Science, Prof. Helga Nowotny President of the European Research Council, will be highlighting the role the ERC has taken to incorporate gender policy within European research.

Thursday 10th May

The First Steps into a ‘Leaky Pipeline ’ – A Longitudinal study of the Pipeline within a Danish University

Date: 10th May
Time: 4.00-6.00pm
Location: Faculty of Engineering, Maths & Science Conference Room, Hamilton Building,
http://www.tcd.ie/Maps/map.php?q=o%27reilly+institute
Speaker: Ruth Emerek

Professor Emerek’s research illustrates that the higher the level of academic positions at universities the lower the percentage of women among employees in Danish universities. Earlier studies have revealed that the increasing proportion of women among university graduates has not resulted in their increasing representation among university academics. This has been attributed to a historical backlog or to a ’leaky pipeline’. This study, based on a longitudinal analysis of data from Aalborg University, documents that women leak from the ‘pipeline’
at the very first steps of the career ladder.

Prof. Emerek's key research areas are gender and migration research as well as statistical methods. She is member of ENEGE, the European network of experts on gender equality, and SEN, the European network of socio-economic experts in the anti-discrimination field, and Director of CoMID, Center for the study of Migration and Diversity at Aalborg University.

This talk and the reception which will follow will also give attendees the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding the underrepresentation of women researchers in the Faculty and potential actions required.
